Dance for whom, for what???

As I reflect on this question, the image that keeps popping up in my head is Apl de Ap’s song and his music video that focuses on the Filipino Veterans issue. Apl's choice to use his art to make a stand is admirable.

To dance for dance sakes, and even for cultural education seem shallow given the pressing and relevant socio-political challenges and struggles that Filipinos face in the motherland and in many corners of the world.

Like music, dance can be and should be a tool to educate, agitate, inspire and help audience to think and move to action. Dance should not only entertain, reflect fun and the idealized and romanticized culture, the good and beautiful. It should have all of these and more…

Dance, like any other artforms, is also political.
